Abstract:The Tangut Empire had its well-improved and special religious law, which stressed protection of Buddhism and Taoism and laid out strict regulations. Provisions concerning the title and garments conferred by the emperor on monks and Taoist, converting to Buddhism and the certificate of monks were also provided in the Tangut religious law. The title conferred on the Tibetan Buddhist saint monk in the Xixia dynasty was the first one in Chinese history. The Tangut law also laid out the rights and obligations of monks and Taoist priests.
